PSATC’s Pool and Spa Apprenticeship Program is designed to educate and train apprentices in two sanctioned professions:

  • Pool and Spa (Hot Tub) Maintenance Specialist

  • Pool and Spa (Hot Tub) Service Technician

Join the thousands of professionals making a great living in the careers of Maintenance Specialist and Service Technician. Upon acceptance, you would be trained to:

  • Maintain pool/spa water chemistry and cleanliness.

  • Service and repair equipment.

  • Monitor materials used for construction and enhancement – from plaster and decking, to decorative rocks, waterfalls, and safety structures.

  • Ensure people’s investment in backyard relaxation and fun does not go to waste, because you keep the waters in tip-top shape – whether to soothe aching muscles, launch cannonballs, or dive in cool water after a long day.

Criteria to become an apprentice:

1.) Be 18 years of age or older

2.) Have a valid driver’s license in good standing

3.) Must work full-time (40 hours/week) for an approved pool service company

4.) Must be willing to dedicate (unpaid) time to take apprenticeship courses on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings as well as a couple of weekend courses.

What You Will be Studying and Learning

PSATC has developed a comprehensive year-long curriculum to educate and train apprentices through our Pool and Spa Apprenticeship Program. It is a demanding series of coursework and training – a minimum of 144 hours of Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI) and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training.  In this process you will be exposed to industry experts teaching and training according to current industry standard practices and technology -- across a number of key curricular categories, including:

  • CPO Certification

  • Business

  • Safety

  • Water Quality

  • Structures and Finishes

  • Circulation and Filtration/Hydraulics

  • Heaters and Optional Equipment

  • Control Systems

  • Pump Motors

  • Electrical

  • Local and ICC Codes

Requirements for Participation

  • Must have high school diploma or GED/equivalent.

  • Must be able to identify normal colors.  To be determined by exam at no cost to applicant.

  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License and have normal insurability and not be at high risk.

  • Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the occupations and work processes.

  • Must pass a general aptitude test, and employer must select you for PSAA participation.

  • Must be 18 years old.  No maximum age.

Once you have completed the year-long program, you will be considered a “fully titled” employee who will earn journeyman wages for either the maintenance technician or service specialist positions, and provided industry-recognized credentials and a Certificate of Completion from the State of California’s Division of Apprenticeship Standards, by authority of the California Apprenticeship Council.

Your completion of the Related Supplemental Instruction will also earn you the following:

  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certification that is valid for five years

  • OSHA 10 Certification

  • National Plasterers Council (NPC) Start-up Certification

  • Basic Residential Water Chemistry Program

  • Additional certifications from multiple industry manufacturers
